Jared L. Cohon University Center Expansion

Overview

The university is presently undertaking a much-needed upgrade of the campus Jared L. Cohon University Center. This expansion will help the university address the increasing demands for fitness and recreation space of today's students and addresses some of CMU's highest priorities:
  • HEALTH & WELLNESS: The university is committed to helping the campus community maintain a healthy, well-balanced lifestyle. 
  • SOCIAL ENGAGEMENT: The expansion will create an even better central gathering place for all members of the CMU community. 
  • PRIDE & PRESTIGE: The new facility brings CMU's offerings in line with our peer institutions and enables us to attract the best and brightest students and faculty.

Key Features & Timeline 

Construction will begin in early 2014, and will open for the 2015-2016 academic year. The expanded University Center, which was built in 1997 and replaced Skibo Hall as the university's student center, will feature:
  • cardio & weight training facilities
  • cycling studio
  • group exercise classrooms
  • multi-purpose studio theatre
  • dance rehearsal space
  • locker rooms
  • "gateway" to campus from Forbes Avenue
  • outdoor plaza and landscape area
